Yeah, the whole Ming Li coincidence is absurd. How did the Chinese girl figure into everything? Not only was she involved with Pawel's sister in law but also with Artur? Seems to be too much of a coincidence. The only thing I can come up with is that Artur might have felt guilt or remorse for the fact that his parents helped to ruin Dawid's life, and he visited him to apologize but it was an exceedingly dangerous thing for him to do, to drop that sort of bomb on a mentally unstable person. Why did Dawid say that Pawel's sister was dead before he shot himself? You'd think she ultimately would have tried, though, given that she even contacted Bozena early on. She was probably ashamed of her actions and still feared punishment if her communication to him somehow got intercepted and caused her to get caught. Why didn't Kamila ever even try to see how Pawel was doing? Also, Dawid knew that Pawel saw him in the intimate situation with Wojtek Malczak in the woods back in 1994 (even though he kept ita secret), and Pawel's father also sued Dawid, so it's a sort of revenge against Pawel and his family for that and an opportunistic way to frame someone else, even though Pawel obviously never did anything to directly harm Dawid. I think it was probably to frame Pawel for the murder of Artur, for the same reason that Dawid wrote Pawel's name in blood at the apartment scene. Why did Artur have clippings of Pawel on him when he died?

For it is only by piecing together the mysteries of her lives that Jules will be able to save the person who has captured her own heart in this one. The whole kingdom believes that Jules is responsible for the murders, and a hefty bounty has been placed on her head. Trevor and Simon form an unlikely friendship. The last thing he wants to deal with is the young construction worker who blows his shot at remodeling Simon’s home. He doesn’t do well with people and has no family, but being a damn good surgeon? He always had that. Simon Malone’s life-performing heart surgery. Too bad the first estimate Trevor goes on alone is for an uptight doctor with a superiority complex.Ī hand injury took away the only important thing in Dr. Sober for thirteen months, he’s determined to do the right thing: rebuild his relationship with his family, and help his brother get Rock Solid Construction off the ground. Trevor Dixon has made too many mistakes to count. At the end of the book, I felt that I was friends of all characters, which was unexpected, considering the short length of the book. So much happened to the main character Tony, as the story followed from adolescence to his old age. It didn’t feel like reading a novella, even though it was a quick read. Sense of an Ending is a short book, with just 50 pages and could even be described as a novella. This novel is totally unputdownable, even on the second read. As the above summary suggests, both times that I have read this book, I have felt compelled to read this book in a single sitting. This is the second time that I’ve read this book. But he is then presented with a mysterious legacy that obliges him to reconsider a variety of things he thought he’d understood all along, and to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.Ī novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single sitting, with stunning psychological and emotional depth and sophistication, The Sense of an Ending is a brilliant new chapter in Julian Barnes’s oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he’d left all this behind as he built a life for himself, and by now his marriage and family and career have fallen into an amicable divorce and retirement. This intense novel follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he has never much thought about – until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance, one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. Only one worry–if she helps her mother complete the list is she actually giving her permission to die? But if her mom doesn’t complete the lists–and her treatment doesn’t work–will Quinn regret not helping make Mom’s dreams come true?Īt the cancer hospital’s home-away-from-home Quinn makes a new friend Annie, whose mom is also undergoing cancer treatment. Though reluctant to face the prospect of her mother’s death, Quinn determines to see that her mom accomplishes everything on the list. When Quinn finds her mother’s teen-years diary, she discovers a list of things her mom always wanted to do before she dies. Fourteen-year-old Quinn travels from her home in Leavenworth, Washington to live in Seattle for two months while her mom undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. The subject matter of the book didn’t bother me at all (which is good, considering the type of lab work that I have to do for my job). Based on how much I’ve loved Roach’s previous books, I just go ahead and buy whatever she’s written recently without even knowing the content. If you’re interested in reading a preview before buying Gulp, you can see pages 105 – 141 here. The book tackles everything related to digestion, starting from the nose (where most of our taste comes from) and ending up exactly where you would think. ( NOTE: Details for next month’s book are at the bottom of this post.) I’m a huge fan of her writing style–witty, full of facts (the footnotes are usually where the best anecdotes are), and delightfully gross. Welcome back to the Skepchick Book Club! This month, we read Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach. |
